Problems solved!

No comment - Post a comment     Filed under General BS!

It has been a interesting week, news wise.

Donald Rumsfeld, our sainted Secretary of Defense, has solved the problem of prisoner abuse in Iraq. He has banned all camera phones and digital cameras which of course ends the abuse; at least we won’t see any more abuse. And, if we can’t see it; it doesn’t exist.

The FBI released a muslim lawyer who was arrested because they claimed his fingerprints were on a bomb bag in Spain. However, the fingerprints turned out to belong to someone else. I am confused. I thought all fingerprints were unique; now we have two people, according to the FBI, with the same fingerprints.

As Don Imus once, or twice, said, you can’t make this stuff up.

The Narrows

The Narrows by Michael Connelly [2004]

Harry Bosch is back!

At the end of the last book I thought maybe he was doing a Marlowe by gaining a family and losing the fire. But he didn’t; lose the fire, or gain a family; though he does gain a daughter.

The Shadow of the Wind

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Translated by Lucia Graves [2004]

A book within a book; and stories within stories. A new classic. I am going to do a complete review after I read the book again. Or, maybe I will listen to it this time.

Read about it here, then buy it from here.

Paradise here on earth…

For your dog, anyway.

Set your dog free. Send him/her/it to a new home on The Dog Island. Maybe I will talk to TiVo about this when I get home.

Is there a Cat Island?

The brain as a trash container

It’s amazing the stuff that you remember from the past; stuff that seems to be trapped in a little trash bin of the brain.

Hi! I’m Buster Brown. I live in a shoe. This is my dog Tige. He lives in here too.

Pluck your magic twanger, Froggy!

Both of these quotes are from a 1940’s children’s radio program and may not be quite right, but they are how I remember them. This page refers to the TV show, which was much later.

There was a machine at shoe stores that x-rayed your feet so you could see all the bones. A green screen with white bones. Not very good for you, I’m sure, but great fun then. Here’s a short article about them with a picture of the machine. Us kids really loved this thing and couldn’t wait to get to the shoe store and stick our feet in.

On the day President Roosevelt died, the radio serial Superman was taken off the air, at least here in Fresno, and it never returned. I think this is true. But I never asked any other kid about it (why I don’t know), nor could I ever find it on the radio again. If it’s not true, it’s wierd; if it is true it’s also wierd.

More later as it seeps out.

The Weekend, or Happy Birthday, Elaine!

No comment - Post a comment     Filed under General BS!

This was a busy weekend. We worked on our storage shed Friday afternoon and Saturday morning then drove to Mountain View for Elaine’s 60th birthday party in the afternoon. Made the trip in 2 hours and 10 minutes. Don’t tell the HP. Can they send a pig ticket after the fact?

Anyway, the party was great, although Elaine can’t possibly be 60, nor can any of us, and I didn’t get drunk since we had to drive home after the party.

One curious thing though. A couple of our friends, who have sons that are around 19 to 21, strongly support the debacle in Iraq. They support it so strongly, and with such passion, that I am very suprised that they have not told their sons to postpone their education and join the army, marines, or navy.

If you believe this war is just, and that the cause is noble, and you have sons or daughters of the right age, you need to have them sign up and do their duty. If you don’t want them involved, maybe you should rethink your position on the war.

Good thing I wasn’t drunk; I would have said this and the evening would have ended on an extremely nasty note.

We were home by midnight. Worked on the shed all day Sunday. TiVo helped by grabbing whatever we were working on and moving it to the other end of the yard.

Oh, yeah, TiVo got an electronic dog door on Friday. He can now go in and out as he pleases. This is supposed to let him go out and keep the cats in. However, this morning about 4:30am, Jimmer was outside our bathroom window yelling to get in. Oops… The “key” is too sensitive. TiVo can be 4 feet away and the door will unlock. This is not good, but I am not sure what to do about it except take the key away at night. We will see.

I've met many thinkers and many cats, but the wisdom of cats is infinitely superior. - Hippolyte Taine
